The EIB, the European Union’s bank, is seeking for its Legal Directorate – Legal Department – Operations

Central Europe/Eastern Neighbours & Central Asia Division

at its headquarters in Luxembourg:


Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st Febuary 2017)

Within the Legal Directorate of EIB the Division is responsible for the provision of legal advice to financing operations of the Bank in the following countries:

  • EU: Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic,
  • Eastern Neighbours: Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus and
  • certain Central Asian countries: Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan

Objective of the traineeship

The overall objective of the traineeship would be to allow the trainee to gain some exposure to, and experience of, legal documentation, in particular, in banking and finance law, and also gain practical experience in EIB financing.


The trainee would be expected to provide assistance in the daily legal work of the Division, as assigned by the Head of Division, across a number of areas where prior legal knowledge is required to complete the task, e.g.:

  • Legal research of national law,
  • Preparing summary notes,
  • Reviewing legal documentation relating to projects and, if appropriate, drafting of certain simple documentation under supervision of division members,
  • Legal research into banking and finance law and related topics,

Academic qualifications and professional skills

  • EU University studies law, University studies in German law would be an advantage,
  • Postgraduate diplomas in law,
  • Legal training in one of the EU jurisdictions falling under the responsibility of the division (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary).
  • Legal training in German law would be an advantage,
  • International experience would be an advantage,
  • Main area: banking and finance law,
  • English (fluent), good command of German, any other language falling within the responsibility of the division would be an advantage,


  • Analytical and problem solving skills,
  • Attention to detail,
  • Ability to produce clear and concise legal memos and reports,
  • Good oral and written communication skills,
  • Strong sense of responsibility, initiative, integrity and commitment,
  • Strong interpersonal communication and negotiation skills, in particular, ability to work in a team,
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and stress-resistance
