Overview of position:

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of refugees. It also has a mandate to help stateless people.
In more than five decades, the agency has helped more than tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today a staff of some 6,600 people in more than 110 countries continue to help more than 34 million persons. To help and protect some of the world’s most vulnerable people in so many places and types of environment.

Role objectives:

The objective for this is to provide translation services in one of the refugee campsites in Souda.

Expected output:

Provide interpretation to the camp management team for their work in shelter allocation, community engagement, food distributions etc.

When necessary provide written translations for the purpose of mass information and communicating with refugees

Fluency in Greek and Arabic or Farsi essential English strongly desirable

Project reporting:

This role reports to the Project Coordinator

Excellent interpersonal skills.
Expertise in translation services
Experience of working remotely and in areas of risk
Expertise in multiple languages
Minimum of 3-5 years in related experience in liaison, communications, translation, interpretation.
Ability to work in a multi-national/cultural environment.
Ability to work in a gender-equal and multi-cultural environment.
Experience working on communications projects for both an internal and an external audience.
Experience working in aid or development.
Experience in dealing with local and national institutions (Government, Military and Police etc.)
Ability to travel (subject to security clearance).
Knowledge of local media and culture in the duty station.
Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Office and/or newer versions) and in handling of web-based management systems.
