AmeriCorps VISTA Member – School & Community Resource Coordinator

Loyola University Maryland is seeking an Maryland-DC Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA member to serve as a school resource coordinator with its York Road Community Initiative. The Initiative supports community and youth development efforts in the York Road neighborhoods and schools just east of Loyola’s main campus, including supporting after school programming and recreation centers. The VISTA will function as a core part of the York Road Initiative team, devoted to building an engaged and empowered community of businesses, institutions, and residents focused on efforts to strengthen the area and its commercial corridor.

The School & Community Resource Coordinator MDCCC VISTA will work directly with Elementary/Middle school staff and neighborhood leadership to:

  • Grow knowledge and relationships with our local community of parents, resident, and students
  • Research sustainable partnerships and opportunities
  • Develop resources to support programming for children and adults
  • Support community input into a new school building – invite and engage parents and residents in planning meetings
  • Help develop academic and social curriculum for students, including outlines and resources for the community building and mediation processes
  • Attend and actively participate in meetings of allied groups and provide outreach, program support, and assistance, including administrative, organizational, and volunteer management, including students and people of all ages
  • Meet requirements of VISTA position, which include: weekly and quarterly reports, training sessions and meetings, creating a legacy manual, and participating in service activities

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen at least 21 years of age
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office, web, and social media)
  • Ability to work in a diverse urban community
  • Ability to work operate within the framework and traditions of a Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher education
  • Willingness to work flexible working hours, including nights and occasional weekends, and perhaps while getting your hands dirty (literally!)
  • Commitment to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA member for one year and agree to the protocol set forth by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and Maryland Campus Compact

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong work ethic, responsible, self‐motivated, and able to carry out and prioritize multiple ongoing projects
  • Genuine enthusiasm for meeting, motivating, and involving people in activities
  • Skillful organizer with demonstrated problem‐solving initiative and attention to detail
  • Interest in youth development, community mediation, resource coordination, issues affecting urban neighborhoods, and asset based community development

The position is open until March 31, 2017 with interviews conducted in April. The placement is for one year, starting June 24, 2017. In addition to AmeriCorps living stipend and education award, housing is included.
