Terms of Reference Division of External Relations

Events, Campaigns and Goodwill Ambassadors Section

UNHCR works worldwide to protect, assist and find solutions for refugees, internally displaced people and stateless populations. It has some 9,700 staff across 126 countries, many of them working in humanitarian emergencies and in close proximity to regions of conflict. In June 2015 it reported that worldwide forced displacement had reached a new post-World War II high of 59.5 million people.

Through strategic planning for events, campaigns and third party support, the Events, Campaigns and Goodwill Ambassadors Section aims to reinforce and amplify all of the other communications initiatives of the Division of External Relations. The Section manages UNHCR’s flagship events including; the Nansen Refugee Award, the #WithRefugees campaign and World Refugee Day (WRD). The overall aim is to encourage further financial support, greater awareness and empathy for forcibly displaced people. Interns are thoroughly embedded in the team and tasked to deliver concrete elements of one of our key projects.

The internship

The team are seeking three interns to support with the #WithRefugees campaign and the Nansen Refugee Award. Interns will be expected to be flexible, proactive and work on multiple tasks with varying deadlines.

Internship time-scale

The internships should last six months (holidays excluded) over the following period:

• 15 January to 31 August 2018

The candidates should have one of the following profiles:

Production and content

• Education and experience in Digital Communications (social media, web, etc).

• Content Production skills or interest (video or graphic design software etc)

• Events management and organization

• Advanced knowledge of corporate software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat

• Basic Photoshop skills would be an asset.

Research and communications

• Education and experience in research and analysis and presentation of information

• Experience in reporting and communication skills

• Research capacity, including preparation of detailed information, analysis of information

• Advanced knowledge of corporate software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint

For both internships, you should show you are passionate about working for an organization that protects people forced to flee. Working knowledge of French, Arabic or Spanish would be an asset but is not essential

The terms of reference include:

Production and content

a. Facilitate the translation processes of certain materials

b. Assist in the development of the Community Map (gathering of content, production of digital content, promotion)

c. Help set up a download page and the upload of key content

d. Help to update web pages for Campaigns, Events and GWAs

e. Follow up with distribution and archiving of key content

f. Liaise with graphic designer to facilitate print production

g. Help produce promotional content for events and campaigns, postcards, roll-ups, short videos, slide shows

h. Assist in the post-campaign impact analysis and report.

i. Assists in related tasks

j. Manage content and create toolkits using Canva

Research and Communications

a. Assist the team by helping respond to day to day requests from the field

b. Undertake desk research into successful social media advocacy campaigns and

connect with local level campaigns

c. Help compile impact reporting and create post WRD field survey and compile feedback

a. Assist with the in-depth research and eligibility determination of Nansen nominations.

b. Assist with the promotion of the call for Nansen nominations to UNHCR staff and externally.

c. Monitor and ensure proper filing

d. Pull together and edit an in-depth WRD global country office activity report (post WRD)

e. Support marketing work with agency contracted to place content and social media assets

f. Help in community building – by identifying key interlocutors and champions

g. Support the planning and execution of Geneva based events including draft agendas and talking points

The interns will report directly to the External Relations Officer in charge of the corresponding project, under the overall authority of the Chief of Section, DER/Events, Campaigns and Goodwill Ambassadors Section.
