Under the supervision of the CIO, the Design and Digital Visibility Architect will be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining UNOPS digital visibility applications, services, components, and interfaces. The position is part of the Enterprise Architecture and Platforms team with members representing domain experts in specific areas of Enterprise Architecture and Platforms.

The Enterprise Architecture and Platforms team will act as the primary technical experts within the UNOPS ICT team. The team will provide a holistic approach to managing the complexity of IT from a business perspective. The team will document the structural and behavioural building blocks that make up the overall information system of the enterprises together with their relationships. In addition to this, the team will go beyond traditional EA to design and architect the future infrastructure, software, and platforms for use within UNOPS as well as provide standards for design and UX. The team will also be engaged in core development activities to build enterprise-wide platforms and components as well as digital visibility solutions.

The Design and Digital Visibility Architect is required to work closely with the UNOPS Communications team and be intimately familiar with the organisation’s visibility needs to design, develop, and deliver effective and visually compelling digital visibility products and services that appropriately reflect the organisation’s values and the work it does to make lives better. The Design and Digital Visibility Architect needs to be a big picture thinker and always keep the purpose / business objectives in mind as well as all standard architectural concerns such as scalability, reliance, reuse, etc. in mind. The Design and Digital Visibility Architect must be able to think out of the box and develop creative solutions.

1. Provides input to the CIO for formulating the ICT strategy and roadmap relating to digital visibility products and services

  • Formulates a clear technological direction and roadmap for the adoption, design, and development of appropriate digital visibility products and platforms that enable UNOPS to gain visibility in strategic areas

  • Evaluates product / platform technology solutions and produces a technical strategy and roadmap for digital visibility platforms and products that best fit within the UNOPS context

  • Contributes to strategic planning and provides guidance and expertise on technical matters

  • Performs detailed analysis and evaluation of platforms and products with an emphasis on:

    New technology trends for viability for use in UNOPS in order to progress the UNOPS technology stack

    Create Proof of Concept (POC) applications to determine fit and usability

    2. Designs, develops, and maintains UNOPS digital visibility platforms, products and services

  • Defines and designs a comprehensive enterprise architecture for:

    • Digital visibility platforms, products and services that provide unique differentiation to UNOPS

    • Cross-cutting platforms such as Digital Asset Management (DAM), Content Delivery Networks (CDN), etc.

    • Digital visibility management tools including monitoring, logging, and analysis of data from social networks, etc.

  • Implements foundation / core platforms through the development of code artefacts by utilising:

    • ASP.NET (C#) or other organisationally approved application development platforms

    • SQL Server or other organisationally approved data / database platforms

    • Organisationally approved JavaScript frameworks (ExtJS, Angular, React, etc.)

  • Reviews architectural decisions, architecture solutions and performs re-engineering as required

  • Evaluates and reviews design frameworks and methodologies relating to digital visibility products and services

  • Ensures optimal performance, scalability, and usability of platforms by defining and leading adoption of solid architectural standards

  • Maintains detailed technical documentation of architecture relating to digital visibility products and services

3. Provides technical expertise for the implementation of digital visibility products and services and establishes UX and visual design standards for all UNOPS digital products

  • Assists in the implementation of technologies

    • Sparring with subject matter experts within UNOPS to ensure a coherent and structured approach to implementation

    • Defining boundaries for the use of specific technologies as well as areas within which degrees of freedom / options may exist

    • Develop and propagate technological stack guidelines

  • Defines and develops User Experience (UX) and visual design standards for all digital products within the organisation

    • Identifies unifying UI metaphors and work on defining rules and guidelines on UI standards

    • Provides thought and design leadership pertaining to UX implementation

    • Creates wireframes, sketches or screen layouts to communicate direction for interface designs and represent concepts being discussed

    • Directs discussions to conceive and later validate UI concepts and metaphors

    • Conducts front-end UI analysis, interviewing, and user and task analysis

    • Collaborates with other architects within the Enterprise Architecture and Platforms team as well as Developers within the ICT Development team to implement UI designs

  • Assists in the development and delivery of HTML5 and JavaScript web applications for use as digital visibility products

  • Actively contributes evidence-based opinions during UX design sessions, with other developers and/or clients

  • Assists in UX testing of business applications, ensuring client needs are met and making sure the applications are optimized. Suggests new approaches and/or tools that may be used to improve UX testing

  • Takes part in the specification of web applications, ensuring high graphical and UX standards are met and brand consistency is adhered to

  • In coordination with the ICT Project Management and Support office and ICT Delivery team leads, serves as a technical liaison on an as-needed basis between ICT and suppliers / outsourced / external partners to provide technical solutions that address business requirements

4. Embeds relevant knowledge management and innovation within the ICT Enterprise Architecture and Platforms function as well as across the organisation

  1. Contributes to the development of internal capacity across the organization in the area of ICT

  2. Constantly monitors and evaluates UNOPS policies, procedures, methods, tools and associated systems to ensure its utility, applicability and efficacy

  3. Recommends new policies and procedures and introduces innovation and best practices in business operations to enhance services

  4. Leads / organises training and awareness / showcasing events and design / set training agendas to build capacity of stakeholders across the business

  5. Gathers knowledge and mentors ICT personnel

    • Research current and future technologies not currently in use by UNOPS in order to broaden the knowledge base and facilitate better technology selection decision making

    • Educate, mentor and communicate principles at large in the ICT Teams and in the organization

    • Facilitate workshops/communications to disseminate new knowledge about technologies and potential impact for UNOPS


Master’s Degree, preferably in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Technology Management, Mathematics or other relevant discipline is required.

A Bachelor’s degree in combination with additional two years of experience may be accepted in lieu of master’s degree.

Secondary education in combination with additional six years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a master’s degree


  • Minimum 8 years of experience required in the area of digital design, architecture, and development of digital visibility products and services

  • Within these 8 years, a minimum of 2 years of CSS3 and HTML5 is required

  • Within these 8 years, a minimum of 3 years of JavaScript, software design and developing web applications is required

  • Hands-on experience with designing, developing, managing and maintaining enterprise-level platforms, products, and services for digital visibility is required

  • Expert level knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and at least one popular Javascript framework like Angular, React, etc., responsive frameworks, SVG, and web accessibility is required

  • Advanced knowledge of wireframing and/or prototyping tools such as Sketch and methodologies is required

  • Proficiency in the execution of usability research and UX design is required

  • Advanced knowledge of video editing tools such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe After Effects, etc. is highly desired

  • Expert knowledge and understanding of Web Service API’s especially with regards to integration

  • Proficiency in content architecture, content strategy, marketing and brand building is highly desired

  • Good knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat is highly desired

  • Excellent communication skills and exceptional understanding of IT


Full working knowledge of English is essential.

Knowledge of another official UNOPS language is an asset
