This opportunity is to join UNICEF staff and researchers working at the heart of a critical research function for children and adolescents, bringing robust research, innovation, challenging and fresh ideas globally. The role will actively develop the resource and partner portfolio for this important function in UNICEF. The role will work with a growing portfolio of private funding and research partnerships. Research areas include child protection and rights e.g. violence, gender, adolescence, education, information technologies, humanitarian contexts and migration and displacement, among others. The Office is currently exploring new areas such as urbanization and environmental/climate issues. In addition, the Office also actively supports evidence synthesis, strengthening research capacity, research uptake and assessing impact. The role joins a committed Director’s Office team, under the supervision of the Deputy Director, and will support cross-office efforts on resource mobilization, donor outreach and co-development of funding proposals. The position will also be expected to provide flexible support to the diverse areas of cross-cutting work of the Director’s office.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Support development of the Office of Research case for support and thematic investment cases: This role will involve working closing with the Director’s Office team and technical research, knowledge management and communications teams in identifying key research questions, thought leadership and communication content, expected results (offer) and asks that are compelling and attractive to existing and potential donors and partners.
2.Develop and strengthen resource mobilization for research and evidence functions at UNICEF Office of Research with existing and new partners: Together with the Director’s office, support Resource Mobilization efforts in line with the Office resource mobilization strategy. This will include conducting a regular scan of thematic interests of potential donors, pre-announcements and calls for research proposals and other opportunities for collaboration including with bilateral, foundations, private companies, and philanthropic donors, and from non-traditional donors, e.g. BRICS and individuals.
3.Support for proposal development: The consultant will provide support in the planning, development, and editing of proposals, presentations, speeches and reports to be used for interaction with donors, partners, and other stakeholders. This will include writing high quality donor submissions in collaboration with teams across Office of research
4.Support in communicating the work of the Office of Research. This role will require liaising with Director’s Office and the Communication teams mainly, but also with other teams across the office in the development of strategic communications content aimed at improving and enhancing the reputation, relevance and recognition of the Office of Research to both internal and external partners. This may include one page summaries or briefs, impact stories, videos, online materials, power points or other communication products as appropriate. It will also involve identifying opportunities for donor recognition and engagement and support in profiling the Office in key events such as the International Council Meeting in November.
5.Capacity strengthening in resource mobilization of the Office of Research Staff and documentation of all activities: The consultant will participate in coordination, planning and delivery of training workshops to OoR staff and relevant partners. The consultant will also establish a work plan, monitor implementation of the action plan and M&E plan and provide support and guidance to the Resource Mobilization Task Team and support the Deputy Director in reporting and providing updates during the monthly Office Management Team Meetings.
6.Perform other related duties as requested, in order to ensure the success of the team, including support to donor events, research workshops and cross-office activities. This may also include support to strategic visioning, donor and contract management, monitoring and evaluation activities, reporting, analysis, and contribution management.

Education/Training: Advanced university degree in related field (International development, public affairs, social science and research or business management)
Required experience: •Demonstrated experience in non-profit resource mobilization/fundraising, business development (research) or financial planning and proven understanding of the international research funding landscape and research process. •Ability to maintain and develop working relationships with new donors and across teams engaged in research at UNICEF•Experience in donor liaison, and ability to work across multi-site resource mobilization dedicated teams at UNICEF and with partners including private fundraising and public partnerships, UNICEF Country Offices and UNICEF National Committees. •Exceptional persuasive written and verbal communication skills;•Strong organization, budget management, coordination, team work and strategic planning skills•Experience in research grant management, drafting budgets, reporting and monitoring of programme implementation, and/or communication of complex technical messages in succinct, user-friendly ways;•Excellent ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
Desirable experience:•Exposure to and understanding of the research and programming context in low and middle income countries, and in multi-site project implementation through a UN agency, or NGO is desirable;•Commitment and understanding of child rights and UNICEF’s mandate and the particular objectives of the UNICEF Office of Research- Innocenti Language requirement: Fluency in English. Knowledge of another UN working language is an asset (especially French, Spanish, and Arabic).
